Below are three adventurous cocktails to create today in celebrating Christopher Columbus and his North American discoveries.
Apocalypto aka Old World into the New World

At the end of the 2006 film starring Mel Gibson, the main character escapes the Mayan sacrificial ceremony and stumbles upon Spanish ships in the harbor, symbolizing the end of the Mayan empire.
¾ part Portón
¾ part 100 Proof Rye Whisky
½ part Velvet Falernum
¾ part Averna
3 dashes Jerry Thomas bitters
1 dash Grapefruit bitters
Add ice and stir and then strain into martini glass; zest with lemon and rim glass w/ oils.
Could any celebration really be a celebration without a margarita?
2 parts Tequila Avión
1 part Fresh Lime Juice
½ part Agave Nectar
Combine ingredients in shaker with ice, and strain vigorously. Fine strain over fresh ice. Garnish with a lime wheel.

1/2 part sweet vermouth
1 teaspoon maraschino cherry juice
1 maraschino cherry
