mini blogging05.27.08

When there is no time for major league blogging there is always mini blogging. Some call it micro blogging but I like to call it mini blogging because really it’s just me reposting randomness I’ve round around the web.

My mini blogging consists of twitter and tumblr.

Here’s the randomess I’ve found recently:

Check out & subscribe/follow to my tumblr to keep being informed of the randomness that I find in the great world wide web. PS send me fun stuff you find or comment on here.

Blogiversary Giveaway04.21.08

Haaaapppppppyyyyy blogiversary to me [insert awful singing voices here]. April 20th was my 1 year blogiversary!

What I learned through my first year of blogging …

  • It’s quite complicated to write an introduction to something that you’ve never done but I think this first year has turned out pretty close to what I planned - What is GenPink?
  • For me comments make me feel like I’m in a popularity contest at school. I love it when I have a lot of comments on my posts. My first high commented post was Top 5 ways to entertain yourself when you are bored [at work]
  • The more I blogged the more blogs I began reading and the more things I wanted to share with my readers. That’s how I first started deciding to do occasional roundup of fun things I liked around the web.
  • Since the internet is such a vast sea of information it’s very cool when you are connected or compared to some of the big names. My first experience with this was being apart of The W List: Outstanding Women Bloggers and then came The Twenty Something Bloggers (20SB) network.
  • After being linked with other bloggers I decided I wanted to have bloggers join my blog. I started having various guest bloggers in September and have continued this through the Twenty Something Advice series and then in March with The ABCs of Gen Y
  • I learned that I loved it when other people blog about me. It’s fun to have 5 minutes of internet fame.
  • I also learned that mini-blogging and twittering can be a fun edition to blogging.
  • Something interesting I discovered is sometimes it’s the short posts that ask a great question spark more conversation that the more in-depth posts.
  • With blogging as in life it’s fun to receive awards.

and last but not least … the blogging world has taught me that people love give-aways so

genpink is giving away a blog design

How do you enter? That’s fairly simple, just go leave a comment on any of my posts from the last year. I will keep track of all of the commenters from now until May 1 and I will announce the winner Friday, May 2. Linking to this post from your blog will get you another entry into the pot and linking to any of my previous posts/series will also get you a chance. So you have a possibility of being entered 3 times.

Playing catch up (not ketchup)02.06.08

I have a confession dear freaders. Since I have gotten my iPhone I have not had much a desire to sit down at my computer while I am at home. Translation = my emails come directly to me so I haven’t been even opening my laptop at all for a few weeks, which also means I haven’t um how do we say even opened google reader *gasp*. I know! Well I have been playing catch up and I must say I have been missing out.

Here is the randomness of things I have gotten to enjoy while playing catch up with my beloved google reader:

I know that seems like a lot of linkage to follow up there but I promise they are well worth it. And for you lazy folks (like me) most of them are picture based.

Happy hump day!

El Favorito01.18.08

The lovely Lisa of 20sb (twentysomething bloggers) notified me that I was nominated for an award for our 1st 20SB Semi Annual Blogging Awards and as a nominee I was to send in 3 of my favorite posts. You’d think this wouldn’t be such a hard thing, but I tell you it really is. I did eventually come up with 3 to send to her but in actuality I have 5 favorite posts. So I decided why not share those with my favorite freaders (friends/readers):

My favorite posts of 2007 (posted in date order):

  • What is GenPink: my first post ever! It’s always fun for me to go back and read this post to see how well I am doing to meet my goals for GenPink
  • 101 one hundred and ones: Since we all love lists and I am forever seeing 101 ways to do this-that-or-the-other I decided one day to make a collection of 101 lists until I came up with 101 different 101 lists. Some of the lists are silly and others are quite interesting.
  • Twenty Something Advice: Don’t plan your life based on what other people expect: This is when the idea came to me have guest bloggers add advice for myself and other twenty somethings. I think this first guest post is very powerful advice.
  • What do you know in your 30s that you didn’t know in your 20s?: I am a huge fan of learning from other people’s experiences and I am always looking for advice from other’s on how to improve my life.
  • Today’s Voices: This post is about my first blogebrity moment when I was mentioned in an article on Yahoo Finance. In this entry I get to react to the idea of being young and still being seen as an authority.

I encourage you to check out those 5 posts and leave me your thoughts in the comments. I also encourage you to go back through your archives and see which posts you are most proud of for 2007. It’s quite interesting to go back and see what all you’ve had to say in the past year.

Congratulations and good luck to everyone who was nominated for an award. Be sure to vote for your favorites! (hint hint wink wink)

Today’s Voices as told by Penelope Trunk11.30.07

Yesterday I was honored to be mentioned in a article written by the one and only Penelope Trunk.

*insert pause here for you to go read the article … yes you I’m still waiting, go read it and come back!*

For those of you who don’t know who Penelope is, here is a snippet of her bio from The Brazen Careerist on Yahoo Finance:

Penelope Trunk writes counterintuitive but effective career advice for a new generation of workers, where she explains why old advice — like pay your dues, climb the ladder, and don’t have gaps in your resume — is outdated and irrelevant in today’s workplace.

If this is your first time here because you are visiting through the article on authority I have a few requests for you.

  • Say hi! Everyone loves comments, especially me. Tell me a little about yourself. If you want to know more about me I am pretty sneaky and I have information about well me, in the "about" tab at the top - ingenious I KNOW!
  • Pull up a chair and browse around GenPink, stay for a while. You can see the top posts over there on the right or just browse around.
  • If you are a twenty something blogger - join us on our 20something Bloggers Network.
  • and last but certainly not least tell your friends to come visit!

And whether you are a seasoned GenPink reader or a first timer I’d like to know your thoughts on Penelope’s article.

Here’s what I think …

Of the whole article this is my favorite part:

And what is authority but the intelligence and knowledge to ask the best questions? Because no one really has all the answers on subjects like work-life balance and careers. So maybe the people who deserve the most authority are simply those who force us to ask sharper questions.

You can keep talking about old measures of authority, or you can take a cue from these Gen Yers and measure authority by how much someone teaches you about seeing the world in a new and useful way.

I could not agree more that online authority can be achieved by creating thought provoking conversation by asking sharp questions. I am not sure though that this authority carries over to offline life as easily. In fact in my life personally it is my constant questioning that causes me strife. The company I work for is very established and, for lack better words, set in it’s ways. There are many times I ask "wouldn’t it be better if we did something such and such way" only to receive the response "well this is the way it has always been done." I think Gen Yers are known for questioning the norm, this is our strongest and weakest trait. Some people praise us for our innovation and others consider us to be rebellious. It’s all about perception. I think this struggle is part of the reason that many of us twenty somethings choose to blog. Blogging is an outlet for exploring new possibilities and a great way to connect with others just like us.

Penelope mentions that authority is about voice.

Can you tell that a real person is behind the ideas? Do you feel like you know him or her? A strong voice is more engaging, and once you’re engaged with someone you’re more willing to listen to her whether or not you agree. In this way, voice begets authority.

By this definition I would say that yes I do get the title of authority because I do show who the real me is in my writing. I am an authority on what I write about only because I write about what is going on in my life. That is the great thing about blogging, you get to do/say/be whatever you want. Some people blog anonymously, other’s share their deep dark secrets and others are selective. I don’t delve too much into my personal life because my goal with this blog is personal development and helping others get through what is commonly known as the quarterlife crisis.

That’s my long winded way of saying, yay I was mentioned on Yahoo!, thank you Penelope for your sharp questions, and welcome to all of the new visitors.

We have lift off11.13.07

Ok so I’ve learned a big lesson I would like to share with all of my favorite internetians. Don’t under any circumstance do major upgrades to your blog the day middle of the night before you are supposed to start a month-long-blog-everyday series. At about 2 am (on November 1) I decided I wanted to switch my blog theme and upgrade some plugins to get my blog all fresh and pretty for November. In doing so I somehow locked up my admin panel because one of the plugins DID NOT LIKE ME. All is fixed now though.

I do have several posts tucked away in my pocket. I do think though that since it is November 13th and I have not made the time to fix my technical difficulties all month long that I will bow out of NoBloPoMo and just post my ABCs a few at a time.

To give you a quick update what’s been going on since the last post about Monster. And might I add … what a way to leave my blog broken for 2 weeks.

  • Life has been great and very busy!
  • We had our grown up girls slumber party it was so much fun and definetly very Sex and the City. I have picture of us in our PJs up on my facebook.
  • There is a possibility that I met a boy but I will not confirm or deny these rumors.
  • I was contacted with a great networking opportunity for GenPink that I am very excited about
  • I am officially no longer a Mary Kay consultant. Betcha didn’t know I was one. If you are considering doing Mary Kay or anything related I’d love to talk to you about it first.
  • I had to change my text messaging plan because apparently I’m a text messaging fiend. I now have 1500 messages a month.
  • I realize it is no longer October but I am a little nervous to change my blog theme until I have sufficient time to make sure I don’t break the blog again.
  • I have not read anyone’s blog in over 2 weeks so I’m avoiding my feed reader because I know that it is feeling betrayed by me.
  • We have over 200 members to 20something bloggers now! And I am in the process (almost done) of getting everyone on the blogroll. Oh and I was blog of the week last week. Also a perfect time to break my blog.
  • I am going to lunch with my lovely preggo (pregnant) friend Andrea today. We are having Thai food!

What’s up with you guys? I may need a cliff notes of what I’ve missed in your world in the last two weeks because I have no idea how I can possibly catch up with everyone. Especially with NoBloPoMo going on.
