This guest post was written by Julianna LoCascio, a personal friend who I like to call the food police. Julianna is a personal trainer who most certainly practices what she preaches.

Listen up people!…What I’m getting ready to share with you will change your quality of life and could be the sole reason why you are not at peak health!

1. You should be getting at least seven hours of uninterrupted sleep per night. I can not stress enough how important this step is in determining how your endocrine system, (which controls your hormone levels), will decide to function.

Remember, 8 hours is ideal and 7 hours is optimal. Also know that there is such a thing as “oversleeping” and “under-sleeping.” These practices can easily disrupt proper hormonal function, which can throw off your entire day and weight-loss efforts. A research study proves that as little as 1-2 nights of restless sleep, or late-night insomnia could throw your entire endocrine system off for the entire week.

2. Next, scheduling a set time for when you go to sleep and when you wake up is crucial for normal brain function. This set schedule helps your body to know what to expect so that it doesn’t feel the need to go in to “fight-or-flight mode.”

Basically, our bodies naturally want to protect and preserve us and it doesn’t know the difference between the stress of a car accident versus the stress we get from breaking up with a boyfriend.

3. You’ve probably heard of the term, human growth hormones or HGH; well, this particular hormone is vital in repairing and restoring cellular function. Your HGH is released a few times throughout the day but it is also released 3-4 times during rest; I am not referring to the 20-minute catnap you had at your lunch-break. This slow release occurs throughout your nightly slumber and that is why it is imperative that you DO NOT interrupt this crucial cycle.

HGH, alone, essentially controls your energy levels, metabolism efficiency and a clear headedness; all of the elements required for weight loss success.

4. NO food before bed! Yes, you heard me right. Studies have shown that your digestive tract could interfere with hormone secretion, which has the potential of slowing your metabolic rate.

5. Also, carb-cravings begin after around 10’o’Clock, when your blood sugar level plummets, therefore impairing your judgment for your weight-loss goals. Self-discipline can get a little unguarded after dark; especially if you’re knocking back the booze, after a long week (which is a whole other discussion!).

6. Get to bed before midnight! People tend to crave carbs late at night, which can add up quick for your daily calorie-intake; Meaning all of the hard-work you put into your workout and a healthy lifestyle is sabotaged by late-night cravings and mindless eating.

7. In the gym, you are essentially breaking or tearing down muscle tissue. When you’re NOT working out, especially during your REM (rapid eye movement sleep) cycle, your muscles are actually regenerating and reforming.

8. Also, it is very important that you combine a fat and protein source with each meal, including breakfast. This will help satisfy you for a longer period of time. Then eat a moderate amount of carbs for lunch an a low-carb, high-protein meal for dinner. This will help you fall asleep and STAY asleep.

9. Try not to consume any fluids before bed, as this could be another trap, when you have to get up to use the restroom, which again interferes with your sleep patterns.

10. There’s no need for supplemental melatonin tablets. Your body can produce a heck of a lot more melatonin on its own, by avoiding as many lights before bed as possible; Be sure to avoid even the slightest glowing light in your room including your alarm clock.

Bonus: Use these helpful wind-down remedies before bed this evening:

Take hot shower or bath 30 min before bed.

Avoid TV, Internet and cell phones 1- 3hours before bed.

Eat a light, protein-dominant dinner.

Avoid fluids 2-3 hours prior to bed

Purchase an inexpensive yellow tinted light-bulb for reading, but not in bed. (Light yellow is easy on the eyes which produces serotonin (the feel good chemical in the brain).

Use your cell phone as an alarm instead of a big bright alarm clock and only set your alarm when necessary.

Also use a soothing, yet still effective alarm sound. Harsh noises, first thing in the morning, can increase stress levels in your body and set a not-so-bright tone for the day.

Cheers to a better YOU!

This guest post was written by Doniree Walker, a 20-something blogger, wanderluster, yogini, and advocate for mindfulness, self-awareness, and living with intention. I had the pleasure of spending a fabulous week at SXSW with Doni in March of this year. If I had to describe Doniree in two words it would be yoga foodie. I’d also like to add that this post was contributed in the midst of a cross country move from Boulder to Portland!

Increased Strength. The first thing someone who hasn’t practiced yoga before will tell me is that they don’t do yoga because they’re not “flexible enough/at all.” I have news for those of you who agree with that statement – SCRATCH THAT. That doesn’t matter. Yoga will focus on proper alignment and building strength, and the flexibility will come later.

Increased Flexibility. With that said, if you aren’t flexible when you start doing yoga, that’s something that will come out of a regular practice as your muscles get stronger. I can’t do the splits or anything, but I swear I’ve grown an inch since I started practicing regularly because my spine has lengthened and the muscles in my back have become stronger and more flexible.

Stress/Anxiety Management. The reason I started practicing yoga in the first place was at the recommendation of friends who saw me trying to deal with far too much anxiety on my own. I was having panic attacks in the shower before work, and panic attacks at night as I tried to sleep. I had no outlet for this adrenaline that always seemed to course through my veins, and the movement associated with Vinyasa (flow) yoga helped provide a way for that energy to circulate without festering. Yoga also gave me breathing tools and a way to mentally and emotionally connect the lessons I was learning on the mat with everyday challenges.

Self-Awareness. What began as a stress management tool has since evolved into a strong introspective and reflective tool. Yoga connects breath, movement, emotions, actions, and spirit. A regular practice has helped me examine pieces of my life more closely and make changes and improvements that have largely contributed to overall peace and happiness. I find inspiration for my writing on the mat, find peace through challenges, and ultimately learn to see life through a lens of love and acceptance – of myself, first and then also of others.

Spiritual Connection. That being said, there’s an opportunity for a strong spiritual connection and practice in yoga as well. It certainly can remain a physical practice, and can also be a transformative experience in spiritual growth as well. Yoga has inspired me to see the world as a much more connected place than I had prior to a regular yoga practice, and has inspired a curiosity about other belief systems that help to further expand my worldview.

Community. There is certainly community around a yoga studio and yogis in a certain city! I’ve found this to be true in both cities I’ve practiced in regularly – Minneapolis/St. Paul and Boulder, Colorado. CorePower Yoga (where I’ve completed a 200-hour Power Yoga Teacher Training program) certainly has a strong, supportive community and other studios as well offer additional workshops and chances to practice a variety of styles with great teachers. My favorite teachers teach at more than one studio, expanding their reach further out into the community.

Quality Personal Time. Maybe it’s your thing to get up for a morning run, or curl up with a book, but my down-time often starts with an hour in a yoga class. I unplug from technology, stop thinking about to-do lists, let go of any challenges or conflicts in my life and spend an hour dedicated to love, growth, and reflection. If you’re juggling a busy schedule, a hectic routine, or a to-do list that feels unmanageable, squeezing in an hour or two a week in a yoga class is an excellent way to bring a sense of balance to your life.

Work/Life Balance. On that note, I promise you that the addition of a couple of hours of yoga into your weekly schedule will not put you behind on your personal and professional projects. If anything, I believe (and have found) that it will make you more inspired, more productive, and more focused.

Self-Confidence. And not just because yoga means stronger muscles. I used to think the numbers on a bathroom scale were the best way to track and measure my physical fitness, and have since discovered that the numbers actually don’t matter at all. Thank goodness! Yoga’s taught me that it’s less about a number and more about a feeling of capability and strength. When you find yourself balanced in a standing posture and holding it for longer than you ever thought you could stand on one leg, or fully up in a headstand for the first time, that feeling of capability far outweighs any feeling of “accomplishment” that is seeing a certain number on a scale. I let go of weight awhile ago, since building muscle means that while shapes and sizes might shift around a little bit – the actual scale number might never change. And that’s ok, because -

Overall Health. You should add yoga to your lifestyle for the overall health benefits it provides. Physical health and healing, emotional balance, mental stability, and control of breath and movement. I plan to make yoga a lifestyle for me, and will practice as long as I’m alive. And I’m counting on that to help me live a very, very long time.

This is the 9th post in December’s Top Tens in 2010 Series. This guest post was written by Michelle, one of the first people I “met” through the blogging word. For several years Michelle had a wildly popular 20sb blog Michelle & the City. She recently turned her love of fitness, healthy food and all things Jillian Michaels into a fitness blog.

It is a well-known fact that exercise can change your life for the better. I doubt I am the first person to tell you that it will increase your energy, boost your self esteem, reduce your risk for heart attack and other life-threatening diseases, increase strength and stamina, decrease stress, and so much more. However, knowing these amazing benefits, over 50% of people that set fitness goals don’t see them through. Why? Because it is hard to stay motivated. I know firsthand.

Up until the beginning of this year, exercise was never a part of my daily life. I tried workout routines in the past that never lasted more than a few weeks at a time. I was full of excuses and lacked motivation. Until I found something that worked for me. Fitness boot camp. Group exercise gave me the encouragement I needed, kept me competitive and most of all kept me coming back for more! Fitness is now an integral part of my life. I don’t believe there is an end to my journey, and I will stay active as long as I am physically able to do so.

I wanted to share with you 10 ways to help you stay on track, so you will have the same success I did and make fitness a lifestyle not a phase.

1. Set Achievable Goals

By making fitness a part of your life, what do you hope to achieve? Run in a 5K? Drop 2 dress sizes? Lose 30 pounds? These are all great long-term goals. What’s even more important is setting small, more manageable goals that will help you achieve your long-term goals faster. This could be as simple as getting your butt to the gym, the amount of time you spend on the elliptical, number of sets/reps, amount of weight you lift, number of laps you can swim, etc.

2. Plan Ahead

Make your workout an appointment on your calendar. Schedule it like you would a business meeting, get together with friends, or haircut. If you don’t make exercising a priority, the excuses will quickly start piling up.

3. Treat Yourself

Rewarding yourself for achieving one of your long-term goals is obvious. However, stay motivated by rewarding yourself on a more frequent basis. Say you had a particularly long day at work and all you wanted to do was watch TV when you got home, but you hit the gym like you planned? Take a relaxing bubble bath as a reward. Have a small piece of your favorite dark chocolate. Whatever will put a smile on your face!

4. Keep Track of Your Progress

And I don’t just mean on the scale. Pounds take time to come off; therefore your weight loss goals will not be instantaneous. It is important to find other ways to track how you’re improving. Give yourself a fitness test before you start working out. See how many pushups you can do, how long you can hold the plank position, how long it takes you to walk/jog/run a mile. Journal your results every few weeks as you continue in your fitness journey. You will even begin to notice the small things: that you are able to carry more grocery bags in one trip, you don’t hit the snooze button as often as you used to, you’re a lot less breathless after multiple trips up/down stairs.

5. Have a Workout Plan for Nights at Home

We’ve all made the excuse before, “I can’t go to the gym or run tonight, it’s raining/snowing/lightning/(insert other terrible weather conditions here).” With winter around the corner, this excuse will likely come up more often than usual. Have a back-up plan. Pick up a fitness DVD (I’m a fan of Jillian Michaels myself), tackle an exercise challenge on BodyRock.tv or My Trainer Bob, have dumbbells/resistance bands on hand for strength training exercises. Don’t let 10 inches of snow keep you from your workout!

6. Get a Workout Buddy

Have a friend, spouse, or co-worker join you at the gym and set a date. It’s harder to come up with excuses not to go when you would be letting someone else down, too.

7. Try Something New

Repetitive routines lead to boredom. You don’t want to reach the point of forcing yourself to exercise. Change it up every once in awhile and try something you’ve never done before. Ever taken a spinning class? Zumba? Yoga? Pilates? Borrow a new workout DVD from a friend or rent one from your local library. Run outside if you normally hit the treadmill. Take the 100 push-up challenge. Track a different route for your run for a change in scenery.

8. Make it Fun

Believe it or not, exercise can be fun! Find something that makes it fun for you. That could be anything from a new workout mix on your iPod to picking up a hula-hoop or skipping down the block to bring out the kid in you again.

9. Get Inspired

Have someone in your life that is your fitness inspiration? A close friend of mine trained for a half marathon this summer. Every time I thought about not going for a run, I remembered that she was likely running 50+ miles that week. Made me realize that the 2 miles I had planned didn’t sound so bad.

10. Tell Your Friends

Tell those closest to you about your new workout routine and goals. Encourage them to keep you motivated. If you start slipping, they’ll be sure to let you know. And they’ll also be the first to tell you how much you’re improving! Tweet about your progress, post your 5K time as your Facebook status. If you are proud of something you’ve accomplished, there’s nothing wrong with spreading the word! You’d be surprised; you could be fitness inspiration in someone else’s life and not even know it.

For those of you who are fitnessites do you have anything else to add? And if you’re not… what do ya think will be your motivator?

Although this site is well PINK I felt compelled to tell ya about a thing coming up called Movember. If you haven’t heard of it yet here’s a little intro video:

The ‘Mo’, slang for moustache, and November come together each year for Movember.

Each Movember we challenge men to change their appearance and the face of men’s health by growing a moustache. The moustache is our ribbon, the means by which we raise awareness and funds for cancers that affect men. Much like the commitment to run or walk for charity, our commitment is to grow a moustache for 30 days. Funds raised benefit the Prostate Cancer Foundation and LIVESTRONG.

Think this all sounds a little silly? Well…

In 2009, global participation of Mo Bros and Mo Sistas climbed to 255,755, with over one million donors raising $42 Million US equivalent dollars for Movember’s global beneficiary partners.

So, whether you’re a Mo Bro or a Mo Sista you can help out by raising awareness of prostate cancer and help raise funds for LiveStrong. Register at Movember.com or find out if you’d like to join an existing team.

I’m not a big fan of mustaches (no offense to those who like them) but I did talk the bf into joining the Dallas team and growing out his ‘stache. I’m sure I’ll be posting photo updates via twitter.

Curious what you’ll look like with a mustache? There’s an app for that. Stachtastic.

And here’s a little mustache trivia for ya from GloriousMustache.com:

In 1967, The Beatles gave away cardboard mustaches with their album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

There are between 10,000 and 20,000 hairs on a man’s face

The only 4 U.S. Presidents known for baring mustaches are: Chester A. Arthur, Grover Cleveland, Theodore Roosevelt, and William H. Taft. Since Taft in 1909, all U.S. Presidents have been clean shaven.

In the U.S. today, there are some ten million millennial men thought to be wearing mustaches.

In a deck of cards the King of Hearts is the only king without a mustache.

Guys, do you dare join in? Who is your mustache baring idol?

This is the second week in a series I’ve started for 2009 called UnMundane Monday.

Each Monday I will post an assignment to make for an UnMundane Monday – so we can get rid of the term "case of The Mondays". Each week’s assignment is inspired by current holidays or inspiration from my life – I have actually already planned out all of the weeks for 2009 – go me!

UnMundane Monday #2: Suit Up & Show Up

Inspiration: We are now on day 12 of the new year – sadly, this is about the time that some people start forgetting about their resolutions. I know many people have working out and/or getting healthy in their proposed resolutions for the year. So today’s assignment is to inspire you to continue going to the gym (or get back in the gym) by acquiring some piece of workout related apparel. According to FitSugar just the act of getting dressed to workout can get you motivated.

Lace up your sneakers and put on your workout clothes. If you’re dressed for exercising the chances are much higher that you will actually do it. Looking down at your sneaks will remind you that a workout is only a heartbeat away.

Recommendations:

Do a quick inventory of your workout attire and see what items you are lacking. If you have an abundance of workout pants (*ehm* I’m talking to myself) you should probably opt for something different. We tend to get in a habit of buying what we like rather than what we need

Ask your friends for recommendations or bookmark blogs & other resources so you can get the best deal.

Be creative in your purchase – you want something that will make you feel good about yourself. Lack of confidence can be a quick source of lake of motivation.

FitSugar recommends you go to sleep with your clothes in the bed with you – it’s an interesting concept, not sure I’d do it though.

My Purchase:

I often run errands after (sometimes before) I workout so I like to have some sort of light jacket to wear over my workout clothes. I have a black one I wear all the time so I’m thinking for my purchase I’m going to opt for this pink New Balance jacket from Amazon.

I also need to run to Walmart tonight to pick up a few miscellaneous items so I may do a quick run through the fitness section.

Where is your favorite place to buy workout clothes?

So in my "normal" day to day life I tend to always be learning something new, but deciding to blog about what I learned has made me more aware of the type of information I learn on any given day. Today I went to the dentist and the hygienist provided this little tidbit "most people tend to think brushing harder is better but actually you should brush longer." So of course being the google nerd that I am I came home and googled this and found out that on average we don’t brush our teeth long enough.

The average person brushes:
Two minutes a day
14 minutes a week
12.1 hours a year
38.5 days in their lifetime

The average person should brush:
Six minutes a day
42 minutes a week
36.4 hours a year
122 days in their lifetime

The twenty something advice series throughout this year has really grown and progressed and I am always excited when I get an email from someone wanting to provide advice to fellow twenty somethings via GenPink. A while back I got the following email from Erica of Five Blondes:

The topic I’d love to write about is something along the lines of ‘When your body strikes back’. I was 18 when I started having seizures and It wasn’t until I was well into my 20s that I really came to terms with it and accepted it. I have advice I can pass on to others who are having health problems as young adults.

I was really intrigued by this idea. I’ve had several friends, especially in the last year, diagnosed with unique and pretty serious health issues. My friend Andrea recently wrote that if the doc says “well, that only happens to .5% of people, so I wouldn’t worry about it” – she’s usually that .5% . So of course I was interested when Erica was offering to shed some light on this topic.

This guest post was written by Erica, 1 of 5 sisters who blogs at Five Blondes. Erica was 18 when she had her first seizure at her home. Later seizures have disrupted a packed movie theatre, scared video game store employees, and freaked out patrons of the golf course she was working at. It has been about 14 months since her last seizure, thanks in large part to her fiance’s constant reminders to stay medicated. Erica is also hoping that the Canadian government will give her drivers license back soon.

* * * * *

I remember commotion – voices, strange noises. I had moved – I wasn’t on the couch where I had earlier laid down for a nap, but rather on the cold hardwood floor below. I opened my eyes slowly to see the face of my doctor. Where did he come from, I wondered.

“Well, Erica,” he said, “Looks like you’re not going to be driving for a while. You just had a seizure.”

I was then wheeled out of my own house on a stretcher and traveled to the nearest hospital. Watching buildings, trees, and roads go by through the tiny ambulance window that I normally saw from the drivers seat of a vehicle gave me an incredible sense of deja vu; understanding that I wouldn’t be driving again for some time was depressing. I was experiencing waves of emotion that I didn’t understand, and my body was acting in ways that confounded me.

From that day on, I’ve been confused as to why my brain would do this. Unfortunately, various specialists in the field of neurology are puzzled as well. Developing a seizure disorder in your late teens is actually not entirely uncommon, and while many grow out of their seizures after just a few years ( as my doctors assured me that I likely would), I’m still taking anti-convulsant medication twice a day at 25. I’ve also been sad, depressed, frustrated, and just plain mad. Who wouldn’t be?

I don’t show my emotions very much outwardly and I think that many people in my life don’t realize just how hard on me the past 7 years have been. I’m sure this is true for many 20-somethings experiencing medical difficulties. Your twenties are about beginning your life as an adult and proving yourself in the world – no one wants to be seen as ‘the girl who has seizures’ or ‘the guy with [insert illness here]‘. My experience has been that you will soon discover just who in your life cares about you the most. You might be surprised! Naturally, close friends and family have always been there for me, but I’ve also had conversations with one of my great-uncles calling me out of the blue after he heard a news report on a new study of how cranberries might cause seizures. My fiance is number one in my support system – he will remind me to ‘take my meds’ three times a day, after I’ve already taken them while standing beside him. Annoying? Yes! Helpful? Absolutely. I’m asked “Did you take your medication today?” and “how are you doing these days?” because people care about me. If you are in a similar situation, just remember that your friends and family bother you because they care.

One things I constantly find myself repeating is “It’s OK”. It’s OK to be depressed, frustrated, and mad. It’s OK to hate being dependant on medication to live a normal life. It’s OK to do your own research and question your doctors! It’s OK to talk to your friends and family about your feelings (if you’re not comfortable sharing everything, I recommend talking to a therapist – get those feelings out!!), and most of all, it’s OK to rely on others for help – you’ll probably find that they’ll be happy to be there for you.
