With the hype of Twitter everyone wants to know–how do I use this tool to successfully grow my business? The answer is public relations. As described by Wikipedia “Public relations (PR) is the practice of managing the flow of information between an organization and its publics.” What better tool to have than a platform where you can send messages out to the publics on behalf of the company?
But I’m a startup, nobody cares about my company
So, let’s start at stage one, it’s time to get press for your startup by forming valuable relationships on Twitter. (more…)
First, let me just say yippie I made my first podcast! Did I mention I’m a little quirky and get excited by very odd things? So, the topic of my first podcast and this post is tooting your own horn. My intention with podcasting is to have it be a supplement to my blog and also to make sure that I don’t repeat myself. So in an ideal world my podcast listeners would also read the blog posts and vice versa but I will make sure that each entity stands alone.
I did a little googleage of the idea of tooting your own horn and turns out there are quite a few books on the topic. The one that comes up immediately is Brag!: The Art of Tooting Your Own Horn without Blowing It by Peggy Klaus. No offense to Peggy but I’ve got about 800 books on my to read list (I mean listen to) so I don’t think this one will make it. But I did find some interesting questions that spark some creativity in learning how to self-promote. The book’s *cough* broken *cough* website has 12 Self-Evaluation Questions that are quite intriguing. My favorite question is “What obstacles have you overcome to get where you are today, both professionally and personally, and what essential lessons have you learned from some of your mistakes?”. That is a serious thought provoking question.
My thoughts on self promotion/tooting your own horn:
Don’t Be Shy: It’s a must
Be tasteful
People are actually interested to hear these things about each other
Only brag about things that are braggable
Listen & pay attention to know when enough is enough
What do you guys think?
*On a side-note yet related topic you can subscribe to my podcast for future episodes (and to hear this one) via iTunes or RSS. After listening to my first draft I realize I talk a bit too fast so I’ll slow it down next time. Also I sound like a big dork, but this is no secret to people who actually know me.
No I’m not going to bust out with ridiculous lyrics (though chances are you’re already hearing the song in your head) the little of this post is inspired by the theme of NaBloPoMo for the month of August – Hot. The chances of me blogging everyday for the month of August is about negative 12. But I can still take inspiration from this month’s theme.
Recently I have been finding that many people, especially 20somethings really don’t get that you really are your own walking advertisement. At any given time you are advertising something about yourself. So here’s my advice … be an advertisement for “why you’re hot”. Just because you are your own worst critic doesn’t mean you should share with the world all the negative things about yourself. I can’t for the life of me figure out why people get on twitter, facebook, myspace, and/or their own personal blog and complain about themselves. Little side note here pictures of kegstands on match.com are a very clear advertisement for yourself. Companies work hard to have a strong brand identity, individuals should too. Some of the best advice I’ve heard about confidence is “fake it ’til you make it”. I think the internet is a perfect forum to start this. So dear freaders I suggest you use twitter and your blog to tell the world why you’re fantabulous (yes I make up words).
So here goes … this is why I’m hot: I’m very creative, 9 times out 10 I can see things from a perspective that others don’t, I get along great with all walks of people, I happen to be blonde and intelligent, I am blessed with the world’s fastest metabolism so I can eat family size macaroni and not gain a pound, I don’t hold grudges, in fact rarely do I get upset enough to have something to hold a grudge about, I’m very practical and love setting goals, I’m smiling most of the time, and most of all I have fun out of life, ohh and obviously I have a fabulous blog .
How bout you? Why are you hot?
