Disconnected in a Connected World02.24.08

In a day in age where almost everyone is instantly connected because of the marvels in technology I think we are more disconnected than ever. In one instant I can send a text message to 100+ of my friends and colleagues. What I also know is that being connected to the whole world makes it very hard to stay connected to the people who are physically in front of you.

I went to dinner with a few friends on Saturday night and we were planning on going out dancing afterwards. Another friend of mine was planning on meeting up with us after dinner because she had to work late. I started texting my friend when we got to the club, asking her when she was coming out, which then turned into me trying to talk her into going out even though she was tired. I spent quite a bit of time leaning against the bar text messaging back and forth with her. It wasn’t until one of the girls I was with came up to me and said “quit texterbating and come dance with us” that I realized that I was completely ignoring the 4 friends I was with because I was trying to convince someone else to come hang out with us. I was using my cell phone as a barrier for being present and just being with the friends who were already there. Once I realized this I put my phone away and I didn’t pull it back out again. But apparently the rest of the club didn’t get the same message. The whole night I noticed people in the middle of the dance floor texting, girls camping out in the bathroom talking on their cell phones and numerous people repeatedly checking their phones. When did we get so connected to our cell phones that we lost connection to the real world?

I challenge you to make your cell phone take a back seat to the real world you are living in and experience the people around you.

This question is for all of the single ladies out there. Do you, or have you ever, googled someone you’ve gone out with?

This question was sparked by this funny graphic I found via MakeUseOf.

The ever changing desktop10.24.07

I am obsessed with changing my wallpaper on my computers (yes there are more than one). Between work and home I regularly use 3 different computers. I have a 23" Mac monitor at work that is amazing at home I have an iMac and a PowerBook. I used to change my wallpaper on each computer once a month, which means weeding through bunches of designs to find the perfect 3.

About a month about I found Desktoptopia and I have been in love oh wait it’s weird to love your computer very happy since the day I downloaded it. My favorite thing about it is I have it set to change my background every 5 hours.

My professors used to tell us that designers should have a gray or neutral background to not distract you in your working environment. I completely disagree, I think designers need inspiration. Or at least this designer does!

This is the background that came up today.

Meet me in the middle10.16.07

So everyone knows the girl from American Pie that says "this one time at band camp" well I am the girl who says "I found this website …". Literally that sentence comes up in day to day conversation all the time.

So yesterday, I found this website … that is so cool (yes I’m a nerd). It’s called Happy Median and the whole premise is "meet halfway between you and your friends. Save time and distance." You see … one of my dearest friends Tanja (she was my fake roommate in college) is now a big fancy art teacher and she moved 50 miles away *tear*. This weekend we were actually discussing what’s a good halfway point for us to do our girl’s dinners. And what do you know today through geeksugar (*heart*) I found Happy Median. I quickly typed in my city, and Tanja’s and our other friend Olivia and viola I was presented with a fun little map and so many options of meeting places.

You should check it out, because … a) I said b) It’s important to stay in touch with your friends (that’s the topic for Thursdays Twenty Something Advice) c) I like the concept behind their logo.

Where’d they come from?09.07.07

Most people use blog stat trackers to help grow their blog, figure out information about their visitors, you know useful things. I decided today I’d use my Google Analytics information for entertainment. One of the many fancy features of google analytics is that you can see what keywords people were searching for that they ended up at your blog. Most of the time those keywords make sense. Sometimes though I am left very confused.

Keywords that make sense for genpink: "reusable coffee sleeves," "101 lists," and of course "genpink". Something scary someone googled my full name. Hmm wonder who is stalking me?

Off the wall keywords:

  • "pink sex wabside list" — what is a wabside and what does that have to do with me?
  • ""lisa gates" "san antonio"" - nope sorry no Lisa here?
  • "clever engagement gifts" - although I might be able to come up with some I haven’t written about this (maybe I should)
  • "college call girl" - ok really now!
  • "erotic relations in the metro" - I really am unsure why I am getting all these crazy searches
  • "how to post a picture comment on myspace+codes+lolcats" - that’s pretty funny because I guess I did mention this
  • "quais clothing" - I don’t even know what that is
  • "wódka dechane" - is that even english?

Until next time, there is my lesson on how not to use google analytics productively. Happy Friday y’all (yep I’m from Texas!)

The W List: Outstanding Women Bloggers08.17.07

I found a great post today through sk*rt of The Magical List of Outstanding Women Bloggers. I am always excited to find new blogs to feed my addiction (and my reader), especially women bloggers.

There are over 150 women bloggers listed. One issue I had with this thorough list - it’s not categorized and there is no way to know what each blog is without visiting each one individually. I guess that’s two issues. So …

Here is the continuance of the outstanding women bloggers list, with blog descriptions. I look forward to making my way through these new blogs.

101 one hundred and ones

That would be one hundred and one, one hundred and ones, not one-O-ones. This is a list of 101 different 101 lists.

The real question should be why does step by step instructions (101) have to be the same as a list of one hundred and one things (101).

There is something about the 101 list that always grabs my attention. I thought it would be fun to see if I could find 101 different 101 lists.

Happy bookmarking!

I thought this was to funny not to share iPhatigue

Don’t get me wrong, I am a Mac user and I would love to have an iPhone, or at least I did want one. At this point, I am getting so tired of seeing commercials and reading about the iPhone I might have changed my mind.

OMG, y’all I am so excited!06.11.07

OMG, y’all (yes I’m from Texas) I am so excited!

A couple of weeks ago I was reading one of the many blogs that I follow and they announced that their was a new website to check out that was giving away a free ipod. So of course, I jumped right over to see what it was because a) I’m a big nerd and I love new websites b) I’d love to win an ipod.

The website was Paperclippy.

Paperclippy is the shopping blog for professional women on the go. We feature cute work outfits, fun office gear, interesting books, and other cool stuff for working gals. We post new items every weekday, so make sure to bookmark the site.

I browsed through the site and proceeded to go enter myself into the drawing for the ipod shuffle. They were requesting help to spread the word about their new site. In exchange for forwarding on their site to my friends I’d be entered into the drawing. (I’m sure some of you remember getting that email).

Anyways … I woke up this morning to an email from them. I WON THE IPOD! I am so excited.

Here is screenshot of what it says on their website. *notice that the name in the hat is mine, how cute is that.

And this is the ipod that I won.

Anyways, yay for me now I will have a cute pink ipod to take to the gym. Go check out paperclippy, I bet you will like it.
