I am hopelessly dependent on someone to cook for me. The only thing I know how to makes is toast. Why do you think I joined the military? They have to feed you, haha.

Elysa, your blog posts always make me want to comment.

This topic isn't really for me, but I thought I would say that.

I hate my kitchen. Its tiny with a poor lay out and has copper tiles on the walls with a counter top that is a weird orange/red/rust color. My kitchen makes me stressed out.

But.

I love to cook. I love creating something for my family to enjoy. I bake cupcakes once a month for the kids at church. My husband jokes about my "Izzy" moments where I start baking whenever I am upset. Cooking is my chance to provide for my family in way that they are not able to provide for themselves.

I love love love my kitchen. Cooking has become joyful and life-giving and restful, and I cherish the time I spend there.

I've always liked to cook, but I agree that when I lived alone I rarely ate anything other than stir-fry, spaghetti, boxed Mac and Cheese and a lot of microwave popcorn. And salad in a bag.

Now though, living with the boy and thus someone to cook for, I love it most days.

I'm just repeating myself though. I wrote a whole post about this the other day: Cooking, like sex, is best approached with wild abandon.

Agreed, on cooking more when you're in a relationship. My ex and I were together for five years, and lived together for about two and a half, and we cooked together all the time. Now that I'm on my own, I just don't see the point in it. Luckily, I have a good guy friend, and we cook together about once a week, and share the leftovers. It works out well.

I used to hate to cook. Hated it with a passion. But lately, the joy that i get out of presenting something nice and enjoying a nice dinner and a bottle of wine with boyfriend after a long day is amazing. I like trying new things and new recipes. I've learned to appreciate the kitchen for what it can be, and not be afraid of it. :) Great post!!

Absolutely nothing inside me wishes to be a reknowned chef. I'm not into crazy spices and baking means eating baked goods... so it's back to mushroom/snow pea quasadellias for me! (That's my best meal... so healthy... so delicious... <10 minutes... why would anybody ever eat anything else? Flax seed wraps and cheese makes a protein, you can add stir fried peppers for a 3rd veggie.. so great)

I definitely agree that relationship status affects the amount of quality time you spend in the kitchen. Leftovers aren't for everyone, and I can truly only handle one more dinner and maybe a lunch of the same meal before I start to say “please, not again!” When two are eating, portions don't matter as much, especially since the guy usually goes back for seconds (if you’re good) and a guy’s mind does have constantly scream “PORTION CONTROL, PUT THE SPOON DOWN AND BACK AWAY SLOWLY!”, so leftovers are minimized to lunch the next day. Now when you’re alone, that Mac & Cheese box just happens to top off my big bowls beautifully, with just enough left over to mix in with my dogs food for a nice treat for him as well!

I definitely have to be in the mood to spend time in my kitchen. But when I do...it's worth it :)
