Review: The King and I at the Winspear Opera House

Rodgers & Hammerstein’s ‘The King and I” is a tale of East meets West. Set in 1860s Bangkok, the musical tells the relationship of the King of Siam and Anna, a British School teacher learning each other’s cultural customs which brings conflict and eventually understanding.

Though the storyline is well-known and predictable, the strong cost rapport and gorgeous set display makes this a must-see musical. Laura Michelle Kelly also known for her role as Mary Poppins brings a strong feminine presence emphasizing the vital role women play in an ever changing society. Jose Llana’s reprises his role at the King of Siam with a commanding presence while allowing moments of humor to come naturally.

With timeless classics like “Getting to Know You” and “I Whistle a Happy Tune”, the audience can take in the compelling love story at Winspear Opera House now through December 31st.
